The Vivienne cause of death confirmed as ‘ketamine-induced cardiac arrest’ after family share statement
RuPaul’s Drag Race star The Vivienne died from cardiac arrest caused by ketamine use, their family has confirmed today via a statement.
James Lee Williams, who was 32, was found dead at their home in Cheshire in January and with the cause of death originally being described as “unnatural”.
An inquest into Williams’ death is scheduled to take place on June 30, 2025 after the family released a statement today regarding the official nature of their death.
Police confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.
Simon Jones, Williams’ manager and close friend, said the family felt it was important to share how the star died.
“I hope that by us releasing this information, we can raise awareness about the dangers of ongoing ketamine usage and what it can do to your body,” he said.

The performer was discovered in the bathroom of their home in Chorlton-by-Backford, near Chester.
The family, alongside Jones, announced plans to work with mental health and addiction service Adferiad.
They aim to “raise vital awareness and give information on how to get help if you are struggling with ketamine usage”.
Chanel Williams, the performer’s sister, said: “Ketamine is an extremely dangerous drug that is becoming more and more prevalent in the UK.
“If we can help raise awareness of the dangers of this drug and help people who may be dealing with ketamine addiction then something positive will come from this complete tragedy.”
Williams, who grew up in Colwyn Bay in North Wales before moving to Liverpool, won the first series of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2019.
The TV personality came third in the 2023 edition of Dancing On Ice.
They had performed as the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard Of Oz musical and were due to return to the stage as the Childcatcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
During their time on Drag Race UK, Williams openly discussed seeking help for ketamine addiction.
The family said Williams “brought the sparkle to life” and will be missed “for eternity”.
Their funeral in Bodelwyddan, Denbighshire, was attended by fellow Drag Race UK stars Tia Kofi and Baga Chipz.
Television favourite Kim Woodburn, Steps’ Ian “H” Watkins and Coronation Street’s Claire Sweeney were also present.
The Williams family hopes their campaign with Adferiad will open up conversations about substance abuse and addiction.
