Amanda Owen shares emotional health update on son Miles after opening up on near-death experience: ‘Exceptionally proud’
Amanda Owen has shared a lengthy statement after opening up on the terrifying experience her family underwent in 2022, which saw her son Miles in a near-death experience.
The Our Yorkshire Farm family hadn’t publicly spoken about the incident before, but decided to share the experience on oldest Owen brother Reuben’s Channel 5 documentary, Life in the Dales, on Tuesday.
The episode saw the usually stoic farmer breaking down in tears as the mother-of-nine recalled the frightening day, which saw Miles, now 17, suffering an unforeseen bout of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).
The mother and son met with the team from the Great North Air Ambulance Service who had saved his life in emotional scenes.
Posting a social media update on Wednesday night, the proud mother paid tribute to those who not only saved her son during the medical emergency, but others who had been around to support her during the ordeal.
Sharing a carrousel of images on her Instagram, including a photo of herself and Miles and some snaps taken from hospital on the day, the Yorkshire Shepherdess penned a comprehensive list of those she was grateful for.
“I am exceptionally proud of Miles in wanting to share his diagnosis with people, raise awareness and show that his Diabetes Type 1 doesn’t hamper him or define him,” she began, adding: “LOOK AT HIM NOW.”
The statement of appreciation continued: “We are aware that many people played a part in @milesowen86 medical emergency.
“Behind the scenes as the whole scenario played out there were random acts of kindness from strangers.
“We all wanted to reach out and express gratitude to the people who made a positive difference on what must surely be one of the most difficult days that no one can ever be prepared for.
“To find yourself in hospital in only the clothes you were standing up in, unprepared and in shock. Then to be given a sideroom in which to sleep where on the bed there is a Pumpkin Parent Pack.
“A bag that had been filled with overnight essentials for anyone with a child in intensive care.
“When at your most fragile this kind of thoughtfulness is a blessed kindness.”
Reflecting on others who had made a difference during the difficult time, Owen went on: “Also to Rangzaib who didn’t flinch at taking me home, a four hour round trip from Middlesbrough to Ravenseat, on slippery roads, through ice and flurries of snow in his taxi for a nominal fee to cover fuel.
“He even went through drive through to buy me coffee. Not to mention ambulance control and crew.
“The helicopter pilot, the crash team & children’s ward doctors and nurses at James Cooke Hospital @nhsengland and our neighbour who brought the community defibrillator and was ready to use if required.
“These people are the best of the best. I am very proud of all of the family & how everyone pulled together @gnairambulance.”
The emotional episode of the Channel 5 show, which aired on Tuesday, saw the family recalling how Miles had suffered, out of the blue, the dangerous complication of type one diabetes, with the nearest hospital a two-hour drive by car.

As they waited to meet the paramedics who had saved Miles three years prior, Owen asked her teenage son: “You don’t remember any of it? Not a bit?”
Miles shook his head, explaining he could only recall waking up in hospital. The pair thanked the medics and the air ambulance service, crediting them for making all the difference in a situation that could have ended very differently.
