Eamonn Holmes leaves Miriam Cates gobsmacked as he opens up on being told to ‘shut his mouth’ by very famous sports star
GB News presenter Eamonn Holmes left his co-host Miriam Cates gobsmacked after revealing a shock encounter with a famous sports star.
As Eamonn and Miriam were joined by sports broadcaster Paul Coyte, the Breakfast anchor revealed one encounter with a sporting star which “taught him a lesson”.
Recalling his interaction, Eamonn explained: “I remember once I was at the snooker tournament and walking up to a player, how people at the height of their career watch the games.
“And I remember saying, ‘incidentally, when this is over, could I…’ – and he just said ‘shut your mouth’.”
Sharing more details about the star, Eamonn added: “He turned, and he said to me – he was wearing sunglasses – he took them off and said, ‘never, ever interrupt me when I’m watching snooker’.”
Miriam was left speechless by the interaction, as Paul exclaimed: “You are kidding me?!”
Admitting he “learned a lesson” from it, Eamonn was then asked by Paul if the star is currently “dead or alive”.
Eamonn simply responded: “He’s very famous.”

Delivering her verdict on Eamonn’s interaction, Miriam admitted that although it was “rude” of the star to reject Eamonn, she claimed many famous people are simply “protecting themselves” from constant public intrusion.
Miriam explained: “I mean, it’s rude, but you can kind of understand that some people need to psychologically protect themselves. And it must be frustrating sometimes when people interrupt you.”
Disagreeing with Miriam, Paul offered a counter argument: “For me, there’s no excuse for that, it’s bad manners.
“At least you’d go ‘look, sorry, but I’m just concentrating at the moment, can you speak to me later on’?”
Heaping praise on a famous sports star of today, Eamonn claimed that golfing champion Rory McIlroy is the “most ordinary guy”, and is “good company”.
Discussing McIlroy following his Grand Slam victory, Eamonn concluded: “I tell you what he is, he’s the most ordinary guy. He’s more than a nice guy. You meet him, he’s just got good company.
“When you think about it, why wait till he’s 60 before recognising his achievements?”
Paul agreed, adding: “He’s the first European to win the Grand Slam, which is something that’s never really mentioned because it’s so rare to win all four majors. But Rory – nobody like Severino Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, none of them did it apart from Rory.
“It’s an incredible thing. And if you can keep grounded when you’ve got that sort of thing that’s a special person.”
