Blondie band member dies aged 70 after private cancer battle as pop group issue statement
Blondie drummer Clem Burke has died at the age of 70 following a private battle with cancer.
The legendary rock ‘n’ roller was a founding member of the iconic new wave band.
His death was announced today in a heartfelt statement from bandmates Debbie Harry and Chris Stein.
“It is with profound sadness that we relay news of the passing of our beloved friend and bandmate Clem Burke following a private battle with cancer,” the statement read.

The drummer had been a vital part of Blondie’s distinctive sound since the band’s formation.
“Clem was not just a drummer; he was the heartbeat of Blondie,” the statement continued. “His talent, energy, and passion for music were unmatched, and his contributions to our sound and success are immeasurable.”
The band highlighted Burke’s impact beyond his musical abilities.
“Beyond his musicianship, Clem was a source of inspiration both on and off the stage,” they said.
His bandmates praised his character and work ethic, adding: “His vibrant spirit, infectious enthusiasm and rock solid work ethic touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
The tribute painted a picture of a musician whose influence extended far beyond his role behind the drum kit.
Burke’s career extended well beyond his work with Blondie.
Described as a “self proclaimed ‘Rock & Roll survivalist'”, he collaborated with numerous iconic artists throughout his decades in music.
His impressive roster of collaborations included Eurythmics, Ramones, Bob Dylan, Bob Geldof, Iggy Pop and Joan Jett.
He also worked with Chequered Past, The Fleshtones, The Romantics, Dramarama and even the Go-Go’s.
“His influence and contributions have spanned decades and genres, leaving an indelible mark on every project he was a part of,” the band noted.
Burke’s versatility and talent made him a sought-after drummer across the music industry.
His musical legacy encompasses a vast catalogue of work with some of rock’s most influential figures.
Blondie extended their “deepest condolences to Clem’s family, friends, and fans around the world” in their statement.
They emphasised the lasting impact of Burke’s musical contributions.
“His legacy will live on through the tremendous amount of music he created and the countless lives he touched,” they said.
The band requested space to process their loss. “As we navigate this profound loss, we ask for privacy during this difficult time,” the statement concluded.
The message ended with a simple farewell: “Godspeed, Dr. Burke.”
