ITV Who Wants to Be a Millionaire fans outraged at player’s ‘rude’ behaviour towards Jeremy Clarkson: ‘No manners!’
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire fans have spoken out in their droves after taking exception to one contestant’s conduct while in the hot-seat.
As is standard on the ITV quiz show, Jeremy Clarkson welcomed a handful of budding quizzers to the stage to see if they could answer 15 brainteasers and walk away with a life-changing sum of cash.
During the instalment, Clarkson was joined by player Matthew Tranter, a GP from Birmingham, who had lofty dreams about what to do with his cash if he were to win big.
Over the course of his interactions with Clarkson, Tranter revealed he was a keen runner and even had a few half-marathons lined up for when he was finished quizzing.
Later, Clarkson wanted to delve further into his life away from the show, asking the contestant: “I understand you fly, you’ve got a pilot’s licence? And if you won a lot of money, you’d fly around the world?”
“Yeah, so if I won a good amount of money, maybe £64,000, I’d buy a share in a new plane,” Trantor replied.
He continued: “If I won half a mil or a mil, it’s take that plane around the world.”
Clarkson was impressed with the player’s ambitions, quickly replying: “A brilliant goal to have actually”
However, it wasn’t the time spent on Trantor’s backstory and interests away from the quiz show that irked viewers, but rather his curt responses when Clarkson asked him about the game in progress.
Throughout a contestant’s game, they are asked ahead of each question after the £1,000 mark whether they would like to set a “safety net”, meaning they can’t go home with anything less than the sum on offer from that point.

When Clarkson did this to Trantor, each time he was met with an abrupt answer of “no”.
Trantor even gave the short answer when Clarkson asked if £64,000 was an appropriate time to set his “safety net”. However, the Clarkson’s Farm star appeared impressed rather than disgruntled by the manner of response.
“Oh! I like this guy, I like him,” Clarkson said with a chuckle after the £64,000 decision, although Trantor did end up using all his remaining lifelines when asked which French region was Dijon the capital.
Trantor took a leap of faith after whittling it down to two answers and got through the £64,000 round, quickly telling Clarkson at the £125,000 round: “I’ll set my safety net.”
Trantor didn’t have a clue about his £125,000 brainteaser and decided he’d walk home with the £64,000 he’d earned.
However, the lack of “please” and “thank you” in his replies to Clarkson left several viewers at home rushing to social media to complain about his conduct.
“What a rude little man,” one person slammed on X, formerly Twitter. “It’s not ‘NO’, it’s ‘no thank you’!… #whowantstobeamillionaire.”
A second similarly raged: “#Whowantstobeamillionaire Set your safety net? No, ‘THANK YOU!’ is the phrase you’re looking for! ‘I’ll take my plane around the world…’ And I’ll take my trolley around Aldi…”
“And he still didn’t say ‘no thank you’ #whowantstobeamillionaire,” a third added after one round, before a fourth weighed in: “Does this GP have no manners? A Thank you wouldn’t go a miss #whowantstobeamillionaire.”
The complaints kept coming as a fifth hit out: “Do you want to set your safety net… No.. surely No thank you #whowantstobeamillionaire.”
And a sixth was also enraged: “No……how about a thank you!! #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire.” (sic)
While fans may have felt the contestant’s behaviour left plenty to be desired, Clarkson was nothing but gracious as he bid Trantor farewell with his five-figure cash prize, giving a handshake to the budding quizzer before he made his way home.
