BBC Countryfile viewers demand ‘trigger warnings’ after graphic segment on show: ‘I was eating my tea!’
BBC Countryfile viewers have demanded trigger warnings after an unexpected segment showing the graphic detail of a bull’s health inspections aired during Sunday evening’s programme.
The controversial scene, which featured veterinary examinations of bull testicles at the Stirling Bull Sales, prompted complaints from audiences who were watching the teatime broadcast.
The episode saw presenters Adam Henson and Charlotte Smith visit one of Scotland’s most prestigious farming events, where approximately 300 pedigree bulls were showcased over two days.
During the programme, Henson joined local farmer Graeme Fraser to follow his prized Aberdeen Angus bulls through the sales process.

Smith focused on the buying side, learning how bidders catch the auctioneer’s eye to secure top-quality bulls for their herds.
The episode also featured behind-the-scenes insights, introducing viewers to the event’s photographer and showcasing the work of dedicated caterers, vets and auctioneers.
However, it was the detailed health inspection segment with vet Charles Marwood that caught viewers off guard.
The check-up began with a bull being led into an enclosure, stopping him from moving, so the vet could be as thorough as he needed.
Stood behind the beast, Marwood began the inspection by explaining: “This is the business end really, it’s really important that the bulls have two fully descended testicles which are symmetrical with no lumps or bumps and then we measure the testicles.”
“Each breed varies with age and circumference, and this one is 43 centimetres,” he noted after wrapping a measuring tape around the cow’s privates – which were filmed in close-up for the programme.
When Henson asked if that was good, Marwood confirmed it was “above average for his breed.”
The fascinated host highlighted the financial implications of the discovery: “And actually, that’s where the money is actually, isn’t it? Because he’s going to produce calves, so that’s essential.”
Viewers quickly took to social media to express their shock at the unexpectedly full-frontal moment.
